When Kazuya was first adopted by the Akanishi family ten years ago, he knew he had to get along with their son, Jin. He knew it wasn’t easy and Jin definitely didn’t make it easy for him. The guy hated him, heck, he even despised, no, loathed him. Yes, Jin loathes him for a reason he doesn’t know. He doesn’t even want to know. He refused to use his foster family’s surname, scared that it might be another reason for his brother to hate him. He’s happy with his family but with Jin’s hatred towards him, he couldn’t help but feel as if there’s something missing.
“Hey,” a friend’s voice snapped him back to reality. “I was asking if you want to hang out with us after school. Toma’s paying.”
He almost nodded absent-mindedly but stopped himself before he could do so. “Did he say where?”
“No, not really, but who cares? It’s free food.” He chuckled at the eating machine before making his way to the library where he could have his peace. It was lunch time and he still has half an hour to waste.
Kazuya isn’t the loner type but he seems to be spacing out a lot these past few days. He sighed as he remembered what happened last night. Their parents were out and a note was the only thing they left, saying something about their dinner. Knowing that Jin would rather starve to death than actually re-heat the food for them to eat, Kazuya took the liberty to do the job for him. He prepared everything just as how their mom does it and being the good brother that he is, he even brought the dinner to Jin’s room. The nervousness he was feeling that time was unbelievable that he almost peed in his pants. Almost.
There was a sparkle of hope when the older one opened the door but just as he caught sight of Kazuya, he scoffed and flipped the tray over, spilling all the contents on the poor boy, thus, a burn on his chest was born. Again, he sighed. The things that he has to endure for his brother— his brother who doesn’t acknowledge him, his brother who doesn’t even want to see him. And since when did he get this dramatic?
He really wasn’t paying attention to where he was going so it wasn’t a mystery when he collided with someone. He winced at the pain on his right shoulder and looked up to see a guy chuckling. He frowned. That wasn’t funny. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry,” the guy apologized in accented Japanese. “Really, I’m sorry. I’m Kim Heechul, remember? The exchange student from Korea.”
He never asked for his name and it should be obvious that he already knows it but out of courtesy, he took the other’s extended hand and in his and shook it, introducing himself, too. “Kamenashi Kazuya.”
“It’s nice to meet you!”
“Hmm…you too. I have to get going now, see you around!” he waved and as he turned on his heel to walk away, the Korean grabbed his wrist. Very original, he thought. “Yes?” he didn’t want to sound rude but really, if this guy’s gonna bother him any further, he won’t hesitate to give him a piece of his mind.
“Well,” Heechul awkwardly let go of Kazuya’s hand as he smiled softly. “I’m kind of new here so, uhm, would it be okay if I hang out with you?”
Much to Kazuya’s protests, he didn’t want Heechul to have a wrong impression of Japanese people so he half-heartedly nodded as the other thanked him with a hug. Is everyone in Korea this touchy?
-
Heechul followed him everywhere he went, not that he minds. Okay, well, he does, a little. But that doesn’t matter. Heechul seems like a cool guy so it should be alright.
“Your Japanese is pretty good.” He complimented, walking back their classroom.
“You think so? My brother taught me the language. It’s a pity he’s not here with me right now.”
“You love your brother that much huh?”
“Yes, of course. Don’t you have a brother?”
“Well, I…” he refused to talk about it. Just the thought of Jin hating him brings tears to his eyes. He couldn’t let Heechul see him cry, it was too early for the other to see him cry. He blinked back his tears and kept silent, thankful that Heechul got the message.
-
The moment he stepped foot inside the house, a fist collided with his cheek. He stumbled and scraped his elbows as he fell hard on the floor. He cracked an eye open and saw a smirking Jin towering him. “Jin…” he trailed off, wondering what he has done wrong to anger the older one.
There was something odd about Jin and he couldn’t quite figure out what it is. He tried to get up but Jin pushed him down and sat on his stomach. Kazuya was slowly getting scared for himself. What is up with this man? He shouted, calling for their parents and Jin slapped him. Tears swelled up in his eyes and the next thing he knew, he was begging for Jin to not hurt him. He was pretty sure a bruise or two would appear on his cheeks.
“Aww, my baby brother is a crybaby.” Jin mocked, laughing almost hysterically.
As soon as those words escaped from his lips, Kazuya concluded that Jin was drunk. Very drunk. “Stop, please.” He pleaded, his voice almost cracking. Jin didn’t budge, he continued to stare at the whimpering man under him with that smirk of his. “Get off me, please.” He tried again, tears streaming down his face. He didn’t care anymore. He wanted to get out of there, to escape from the insane man that is his brother.
With the strength he has, he managed to push the older man away from him. He made a run but Jin grabbed onto his leg and pulled him down. He fell on the floor with a loud thud and he was unconscious.
-
The first thing he did when he gained consciousness was check if Jin was around the vicinity and fuck. There he was, sleeping on the couch and Kazuya felt his chest tighten. He scanned the room, yeah, he’s definitely in a hospital. His body felt numb and so he tried to move, but the pain on his back and head didn’t let him. He cursed.
“Oh, honey, you’re awake.” said his mother looking so worried. “What happened? We found you unconscious and you were bleeding.”
Kazuya smiled, reaching out for her hand and gently squeezing it. “I’m okay,” he managed to say with a hoarse voice.
“We’re lucky your brother found you .” Kazuya almost scoffed. Yes, of course, how sweet of Jin to do that. “But honey, why are there bruises on your cheek? Did you get in a fight?”
“He did, I saw him.” Kazuya had the urge to pound Jin’s head on the wall at that moment. “He was with this girly-looking guy who I think is his boyfriend. He might be in a gang, mom. And he’s gay.” If it wasn’t for his dry throat, Kazuya would’ve shouted profanities at him but he managed to calm himself down, his fists clenched tightly. Jin sat on the edge of his bed and really, he would kick him if he could. “I was right all along. Mom, would you believe that my brother’s gay? For all we know, he’s a topnotch porn star.”
“Jin! Watch your words young man!”
“What?”
When their mom looked at him, he knew she was expecting something. Something like a denial, but the look on Jin’s face is telling him to do otherwise. If Jin wants this kind of game, okay, two can play at this. If this is the only way he could get to talk to the other, then fine. He cleared his throat and look at their mom as if he was sorry. “It’s true, mom. I’m bisexual and I do have a boyfriend. I’m not in a gang or a porn star. I’m sorry for not telling you earlier. I was scared.”
Jin’s shocked expression was priceless. He could tell that the other didn’t expect this sudden confession. All he could do is sigh and wonder how he’ll ask Heechul to be his pretend boyfriend.
Oh the things he does for Jin.
